Deleting all the social accounts I never use today. Already got rid of the Truth Cafe and Plurk accounts I mentioned yesterday, and nuked my Mastadon as well. Currently on the fence about my Lemmy and my Pillowfort, though for different reasons. Pillowfort accounts cost, like, $5 to register now, I think? And I'm stingy enough that I'm compelled to sit on it just in case I might want to get active there in the future, so as to not have to spend $5 on an account I once got for free back when the site was brand new. As for the Lemmy account . . . I don't even really know. I was super active on it when I first registered, so maybe I don't want all my effort from before to go to waste? 

Eh, it's already gone to waste since I never use it over Reddit anyway. I'm gonna delete right now.

Deleted. I wish I could do the same to my Facebook, but it requires logging in, and don't want to interact with it even for the couple of minutes it would take me to do that and wipe it. The only thing that left that I absolutely want to get rid of is Discord, unfortunately the couple of communities I follow on there can't be found anywhere else yet, so I have to wait to see if they'll be making moves any time soon. I've already prepared by making a Stoat account and a Matrix account, and I'll make a Fluxer when they finally come out with a mobile app. Once I know where we're migrating, I'll delete the unneeded ones. I wish they had gone with any other platform to begin with tbh. I've disliked Discord from the beginning, never liked the real-time group-chat aspect, too overwhelming.

newcomers is a good place to search for other folks who are moving from sinking platforms to Dreamwidth. You might be able to find people or communities you want to keep in touch with, or just a handful of other fans to create a new community here.

I presently use Dreamwidth as a personal journal rather than a social site, but thanks for letting me know! I didn't know there was a specific page for newcomers back when I joined, so I'll definitely look around there <3

Glad to see someone else joining Matrix!! I don't have the money for it right now but one day I would love to host my own matrix instance for fandom types, for now im just on the matrix.org homeserver.

I've been contemplating getting rid of Discord for a while now after all the AI and age-verification bullshit started happening. Now that it's launching age verification globally, I'm deleting my account as soon as it starts asking me to upload my ID.

Pillowfort seemed promising but it seems to always be on the verge of shutdown. There was also cohost, which I liked at first before the mods revealed themselves to be morons that would ban people for the stupidest shit, which made me feel a little vindicated when they shut down due to lack of funding.

I'm especially interested in Matrix! I can't see myself using it much since I'm a life-long lurker rather than being chatty, but I'm a fan of how it's decentralized like email. I'm just anxious now because I talked to some mods of my Discord communities, and they said they have no plans of migrating because "the age-verification thing is for channels with NSFW, and we don't have that here." I was tempted to argue that I was more concerned about the hacking thing, but why make an issue when their stance has already been made clear, y'know?

I don't go on Pillowfort enough to confirm or deny if it feels like shutdown is looming, but I will say that I got the impression that things were going decently enough since they finally got an app version available some months back, something they'd been promising for a while now. Management-wise, the site feels like ao3 to me, determined to be entirely community-funded.

I tried cohost, too, but since it was a Twitter alternative, I never enjoyed it much. Never got a feel for their banning habits, but I didn't care for the vibe of the members most of the time any way. I was annoyed when it shut down, but that was because so many 'alternatives' were popping up back then, and then disappearing soon after, whether from lack of funding or lack of interest.
